Making Sense of Stefon Diggs Trade | Weekly NFL Content Roundup
The Best NFL Content From The Week That Was
The Buffalo Bills’ trade that sent Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans figures to shift the balance of power in the AFC Super Bowl race.
However, not everyone agrees that the Bills got weaker and that Diggs puts burgeoning franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud and the Texans over the top.
“It’s a risky move for the Texans,” an AFC Scouting Director tells me. “Especially with his declining production and his inconsistent personality. And, he’s now north of 30.”
Even though Diggs did not reach the end zone over the final seven weeks for the Bills last season, trading him away seems like a move made with designs on overhauling the roster while still trying to compete.
Buffalo no longer has a true No. 1 wide receiver. Maybe that will change during the NFL Draft. But, the offense is undoubtedly weaker today. Maybe it would have been, anyway, if Diggs’ 2023 slide bled into 2024.
Meanwhile, Houston hopes that Diggs no longer needing to be the face and focal point of a receiving corps, now alongside Nico Collins and Tank Dell will rejuvenate his career and production.
Stroud has an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions, now with six returning playmakers with at least 400 receiving yards as the Texans are clearly moving mountains to maximize their Super Bowl window while he’s still on his rookie contract.
Because the Bills have Josh Allen, they’re going to be in the mix.
However, the Texans may have launched like an Apollo rocket past Buffalo as the biggest threat to the Chiefs returning to a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Weekly NFL Roundup!!
One of the stated goals of this newsletter from it’s launch, is for it to serve as a clearinghouse for my best NFL content that you might have missed, thanks to the fractured social media algorithm.
So, without further adieu, settle in with your favorite cup of coffee — or adult beverage, and enjoy the content and reporting I’m most proud of from the week that was:
Eagles Linked to 4-Time All-Pro to Bolster Big Weakness
The Philadelphia Eagles have been among the more aggressive teams in free agency, adding marquee names at some of the roster’s biggest needs. However, general manager Howie Roseman still has work to do.
Few position groups experienced a more dramatic dropoff during a late-season collapse to close out the 2023 season than the secondary. After hiring Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, the Eagles could turn to one of his former players to upgrade arguably the biggest weakness remaining on the roster.
Kansas City Chiefs Showing Interest in Decisive ‘One Cut’ Runner, Source Says
It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see the Kansas City Chiefs prioritize coming away from draft weekend with a running back.
The Kansas City Chiefs could be looking for quality, and young, running back depth during this year’s NFL Draft, even after re-signing Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Former NFL GM Urges Cowboys to Trade Up to Fill Biggest Need
The Dallas Cowboys have a massive hole to fill along the offensive line, following All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith‘s departure via free agency to the New York Jets.
Dallas could invest an early-round pick to bolster an inexperienced backfield or fill a void in the linebacking corps. However, one former NFL general manager believes Jerry Jones and the Cowboys need to prioritize offensive tackle in the NFL Draft and even trade up to get one of the premier prospects at the position.
New England Patriots Should Trade for Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin to Boost Rookie QB
Presuming the New England Patriots stand pat with the No. 3 overall pick in this month’s NFL Draft and select the top remaining quarterback on the board, surrounding their young passer with elite playmakers should become a top priority. Chris Godwin could be a name to watch for the Patriots.
Given that Kendrick Bourne is currently the receiver sitting atop the Patriots’ depth chart, and none of New England’s top-three receivers surpassed 600 receiving yards in 2023, it’s currently a suboptimal situation to drop a young quarterback into.
Arizona Cardinals Working Out LB with 172 Tackles, Sources Say
Former Arizona State linebacker Travion Brown will work out at the Arizona Cardinals‘ local pro day, ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, league sources tell Heavy.
Brown, 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds transferred to Arizona State before the 2023 campaign and finished last season with a career-high 53 total tackles, half a sack, one interception, and one pass breakup.
Cowboys’ Missed Opportunity: Derrick Henry Opens Up on Snub
Derrick Henry wanted to put on a Dallas Cowboys uniform, but that interest wasn’t reciprocated.
Henry, who signed a two-year contract worth just $16 million with the Baltimore Ravens, told The Pivot that the Cowboys never even called ahead of free agency beginning.
