Week 3 of the NFL season will feature a new starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers as a forgotten veteran looks to continue his hot start to what already looks like the most impressive season of his career.

Let’s dive right into your questions that this week focus on the rebuilding Panthers, rebounding Sam Darnold, and reeling Cincinnati Bengals in this week’s Football Friday Mailbag!

Will Carolina get calls on Jaycee Horn prior to the trade deadline? Would they consider moving him & what do you think the compensation ask would be? (From

The Panthers’ situation is going to be fascinatingly intriguing to watch at the deadline.

If Bryce Young’s colossally disappointing first two games of the season, and subsequent benching by first-year head coach Dave Canales underscore anything it is that the Panthers are lightyears away from being lightyears way. General manager Dan Morgan and the Panthers are staring down the barrel of a full-fledged rebuild and at the dubious history of potentially being the first franchise since 1947 to take a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick for the second time in three years.

After trading away elite edge rusher Brian Burns during the offseason, would Morgan dare trade away Horn, a 24-year-old former No. 8 overall pick who plays one of the premier positions in the sport at a nearly elite level?

Conventional wisdom suggests a cornerback one year removed from holding opposing quarterbacks to a meager 88.2 passer rating while garnering an elite 84.1 grade from Pro Football Focus would be a foundational building block the franchise would prefer to be a centerpiece of their secondary.

However, not everyone is convinced that is how this will play out.

“I think Carolina would be crazy to pay him,” a league source familiar with the Panthers’ thinking tells me, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely. “He needs to go somewhere he can shine more.”
