Super Bowl Collision Course Revealed on NFL Judgement Day | 4 Downs
Josh Allen's Bills Issue a Motown Beatdown, Eagles Pummel Steelers, Packers Make a Statement
Few NFL Sundays in recent memory have delivered the drama and intrigue of Week 15, with matchups that showcased the league’s best teams and set the stage for playoff battles to come.
Among them, the Bills and Lions, and Eagles and Steelers delivered a pair of thrillers that felt more like Super Bowl previews than regular season matchups.
As the playoff picture takes shape, Week 15 felt like Judgement Day across the NFL, as many teams faced near-death experiences and others survived their most daunting tests of the year.
Meanwhile, big games such as Colts vs. Broncos, Seahawks vs. Packers, and Buccaneers vs. Chargers, each directly impacted the seedings in both conferences as the stretch run intensifies.
This was a week that more than lived up to the hype the schedule offered.
In Detroit, the Buffalo Bills’ championship explosiveness powered a demolition of the Lions in a game that could prompt some soul-searching for head coach Dan Campbell’s team as Detroit was outclassed in every facet.
Josh Allen seemingly stretched his lead over the field in the MVP race, starting a scorching five-of-six for 100 yards while adding two quarterback sneak touchdowns in the first quarter, setting the tone of a 48-42 Bills victory over the Lions to improve to 11-3.
“What stands out about Buffalo to me this season,” a rival NFL offensive coach tells me. “Is they are playing more as a team than they ever have. Last year, they killed themselves like they were looking for big-shot plays over just moving the ball, and moving the chains, while being opportunistic about their deep shots.”
Inside this column; the Eagles’ grittiness reflects the fighting spirit of the city of Brotherly Love in a colossal win over the Steelers, Indianapolis couldn’t make Bo Nix play for some uncharacteristic rookie mistakes, Joe Burrow authors a transformative performance, and much more.
Allen, as he has been for much of this season, was the driving force for the Bills, but he was far from alone in his dominance over Detroit.
Finishing with 362 passing yards and two touchdowns, while adding 68 rushing yards and two scores, Allen capped his performance with a 22-yard run through the heart of the Lions’ defense with 6:36 remaining and Buffalo leading 45-35 that might as well have been a stake through the heart of Detroit’s ill-fated comeback bid.
Allen very well may have shored up the MVP award in the NFL’s biggest regular season game, so far.
One NFL executive tells me there’s a pretty simple aspect of Allen’s skill set that makes him elite.
